Have the death certified by a doctor
Declare the death to the commune
Order 10 to 15 death certificates
Choose a funeral director and request a written quote
Check whether a prepaid funeral contract exists
Look for a will or have the register of wills searched
Inform close family and the employer
Secure the deceased's home

First and second week

Notify every bank in writing
Request balances as at the date of death
Notify the CNS and claim the funeral allowance
Notify the CNAP and apply for a survivor's pension
Contact the employer about final pay and group insurance
Notify insurers (life, outstanding balance, home, motor)
Make an appointment with the notary
Arrange redirection of the post

First and second month

Cancel or transfer energy, water and telecoms
Cancel recurring subscriptions
Settle the vehicle position with the SNCA
Deal with the lease or inform the landlord
Draw up the list of assets and liabilities for the notary
Decide on acceptance or renunciation
Request a valuation of the property
Check that home insurance covers the vacancy

Months 3 to 12

File the inheritance declaration with the AED
File the deceased's tax return with the ACD
Sign the deed of inheritance
Agree between heirs what happens to the property
Gather the sale documents if a sale is decided
Proceed with the division or the buyout of shares
Close the bank accounts once everything is settled
